Practitioners of folk medicine recommended simple natural sinus remedies that were prepared and used at home.
The old time doctors felt that chronic sinus congestion, called "chronic nasal catarrh," led to many other systemic weaknesses like cough, bronchitis, mental defect, neurological problems and digestive disorders. Keeping clear sinuses was very important to the overall state of health.
Preparing home remedies for sinus relief
This home remedy calls for one ounce of boracic acid and one quart of pure water.
Dissolve the acid in water, fill a syringe with the mixture and inject a flow of water through the nostrils while the head is bent forward. The fluid will drain out through the nostrils and/or the mouth and flush mucus out with it.
Any mild antiseptic, including castile soap, can be substituted in place of boracic acid.
In Indian medicine a "neti pot" was used to flush mucus from the sinus passages. You can purchase a neti pot or a complete nasal flush system here.
